RESUMEN DEL PROYECTO
|
Relative sea-level changes are related to eustatic events such as the expansion of ice caps in polar regions, as well as to local tectonic and isostatic processes. A thorough understanding of the interaction of these processes in any particular region can have many scientific and economic ramifications. For example, sea-level changes play an important role in sequence stratigraphy, which has developed into one of the major tools in petroleum exploration over the last few decades. In Chile, there have been relatively few attempts to disentangle the effects of the Andean tectonism from global sea-level oscillations, so that much uncertainty exists in this regard. This project proposes to study relative sea-level changes along the Chilean coastline during the Neogene and Quaternary, with two specific aims in mind:
In the first place, the Chilean coastal region is considered to have a high potential for hosting paleoplacer gold deposits. There are many primary and secondary gold occurrences in the hinterland, which upon erosion would have released gold into the paleodrainage system. It is to be expected that considerable reworking of this gold would have taken place along the paleocoastline, conceivably leading to the formation of enriched placer deposits. In particular, paleobeaches and ravinement surfaces related to marine transgression are considered to be highly favourable environments. The project thus aims to eventually identify the coastal region with the highest potential to host gold paleoplacers, taking into account the availability of suitable gold sources in the interior as well as the presence of favourable facies and erosional surfaces in the coastal successions. Initially, the geology of Neogene and immediately overlying Quaternary deposits of six areas will be studied, namely at Antofagasta, Copiapo, Carizalillo, La Serena, Navidad and Arauco. In each of these areas, mapping of favourable facies and erosional surfaces will be followed up by detailed stratigraphic, sedimentological and paleontological studies to determine the subenvironments of deposition, ages of the deposits and the sequence of events. This should allow sea-level curves corresponding to this period to be drawn up for the entire northern to south-central coastline of Chile. Samples for gold analysis will be taken of favourable facies and deposits directly overlying ravinement surfaces. Finally, the most promising target area will be selected for detailed studies on gold mineralization. If significant concentrations of gold are encountered, an exploration model will be formulated to assist interested mining companies.
The second aim of this project, which is to be undertaken in cooperation with the Institut de Recherche pour le Développment (IRD) in France, is to investigate the relationship between the rate of Andean uplift and erosion along the length of the mountain chain. Although the subduction rate of the Nazca Plate is relatively homogeneous from north to south, the morphology of the Andes shows an abrupt change in elevation in the same direction. North of 35ºS the mountain peaks regularly exceed 6000 m, whereas they seldom reach 3000 m between Concepción and Taitao. Tectonically, the accepted model for the north of Chile considers crustal thickening due to underplating to be the driving force of mountain-building, whereas the south is more complex. Here, crustal shortening is less significant, with normal and shear faults being characteristic of an inhomogeneous stress field. However, it is not certain whether the style of tectonism plays a greater role in the observed geomorphological change than the actual climate. The south of Chile receives much more rain and therefore should exhibit a much higher rate of erosion. The relationship between these factors therefore should be investigated to determine their relative importance. The proposed study (which will be carried out by the French researchers) will attempt to quantify the rate of uplift of the Andes and erosion in three different sectors (northern, central and southern Chile), as well as determining the force and deformation fields in order to model the effects of surficial and mountain-building processes. The present study (this project) is expected to cast more light on the rates of erosion and uplift in the hinterland over the last 23 Ma by relating these processes to their effect on sea-level changes and the rate of sedimentation along the coast.
