DRI Program

This department contributes to the strengthening of activities that support science and technology. It establishes links and cooperation with other countries and higher education institutions, particularly those that are at the forefront in the development of advanced human capital.

Mission

The DRI’s purpose is to uphold CONICYT’s international strategy of promoting the development of advanced human capital and of a scientific and technological base. The Department of International Relations encourages the integration of Chile’s scientific community with its international counterparts, on the basis of scientific excellence and common interests, and articulates the work of CONICYT with other countries, agencies, and institutions, both in the development of human capital and in scientific and technological development.

Vision

Countries currently have different modalities of development. International cooperation is a very relevant component, due to its versatility and its capacity to respond to strategic requirements. This cooperation is not limited to obtaining complementary resources, since it facilitates the generation of trust and partnerships, and the attainment of common goals. The benefits of international cooperation in science and technology are obvious and numerous: access to physical, human, and financial resources that are not locally available; contributions to the development of national capacities; synergies in science networks; and others. Acknowledging these positive effects, developed countries like Germany, Finland, and Canada, and international organizations like the European Union, the OECD, and the United Nations, have put particular emphasis on strengthening scientific international cooperation. From the perspective of a policy of national development of science, technology, and innovation, it is not possible to make significant progress without an international dimension that spurs that policy and adds value. For Chile’s scientific and technological development, it is essential to establish bonds with the international community in that arena. This makes it possible to build new expertise, from basic research to technological innovation, and also contributes to improve productivity, to diversify exports, to generate more productive innovation, and to develop critical mass through the training of human resources in state–of–the–art priority areas.
