In its many branches, the social sciences aim to describe and explain the different phenomena that characterize our social reality. However, any type of approximation to social phenomena requires the prior clarification of a number of conceptual issues. In this context, there is little agreement across the social sciences about the basic methods, aims, and fundamental assumptions about human beings that should be endorsed at the moment of approaching social phenomena. Certainty, the discussion of these many issues inevitably links to a number of long-standing debates in philosophy.

The Edinburgh-Manchester Workshop in Philosophy and the Making of the Social Sciencesconstitutes an academic forum devoted to the discussion and clarification of some of the many philosophical problems surrounding the making of the social sciences. Our Keynote Speaker, John Searle, Slusser Professor of Philosophy, University of California at Berkeley, will discuss some of the most relevant issues regarding the philosophical assumptions in current social sciences. In addition, two distinguished academics from the University of Manchester and University of Edinburgh respectively will examine complementary issues related to the philosophical and methodological challenges that arise from the making of the social sciences.

The event has been jointly sponsored by the University of Edinburgh School of Health in Social Sciences, the University of Manchester Philosophy Department, and the Aristotelian Society.
