Fonis presents book that summarizes a decade of support for applied research in health

• In a ceremony with greetings of President Bachelet and involvement of the Rector of the University of Chile, the Fonis CONICYT and Health Ministry Program, also commemorated its ten years of uninterrupted work and funding to various initiatives.

 

Executive Director (City) CONICYT, María Elena Boisier, highlighted the achievements of Fonis Programme and projects funded.

Above 300 specialized projects led by researchers in the field of applied health have materialized thanks to the resources provided by the National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research, CONICYT, and Ministry of Health, who joined forces to start the year 2003 to the National Fund for Research and Development in Health, Fonis. To commemorate the achievements of a decade of work, Programme makers and researchers called the area a ceremony where he was presented the book "10 years supporting applied research in health in Chile".

The event was attended by the Executive Director (City) CONICYT, María Elena Boisier; the Rector of the University of Chile, Dr. Ennio Vivaldi; Chief Strategic Development Department of the Ministry of Health, Alex Alarcón; the former directors of Fonis Program, doctors Maria Soledad Barria and Ximena Luengo; academic authorities and researchers.

To begin the ceremony, was read a greeting sent by the President of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet, who during his tenure as Minister of Health in the government of Ricardo Lagos, participated in the early stages of creating the Fund. "You know I have here affects involved. I feel part of this project and today, a decade later, I am proud of the prolific work and the significant contribution they have made to applied research in health ", said the letter from the President.

The letter added that "this program, first of its kind, has been crucial for our country forward in generating the necessary knowledge to solve health problems in the most vulnerable population of Chile ".

Then it was the turn of María Elena Boisier, Executive Director (City) CONICYT, who gave an overview of the history of Fonis, highlighting the achievements and the impact they have had some of the initiatives funded by the different instruments of the program, especially those that have received support from the National Project Competition in Health Research and Development.

The ceremony was an emotional moment in which the work of the former directors of the program was highlighted. On the occasion, Drs Maria Soledad Barria and Ximena Luengo could be present and received at the hands of the director (s) of Fonis, Carmen Huerta, recognition for their committed work.

The book "10 years of applied research in health in Chile" was in charge of Dr. Rodrigo Salinas, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Chile, who made an interesting journey through the dawn of applied research in our country. The publication summarizes the work carried out between 2003 and 2013 and presents some of the projects financed during this period.

Finally, it was the turn of Dr. Vicente Valdivieso, Professor Emeritus of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, and member of the working group that issued the first guidelines for the creation of Fonis, who explained the importance of this fund has for researchers.
