Engineers at the University of Chile have software that detects plagiarism in work

SANTIAGO.- In an event held this morning at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, University of Chile introduced the software “Docode” (Document Copy Detection), a tool designed by engineers of the institution and to detect plagiarism in student work.

 

The program was developed with the support of Fondef and the university. The work included the contribution of engineers, lawyers, sociologists, journalists, among other disciplines.

 

The software responds to a need today: young people do not understand that copy information from Internet, without citing and passing as their own, qualifies as plagiarism. This idea is supported by a study by the team over DOCODE 3 thousand students of secondary and higher education in Chile, which concluded that an 80% of them had plagiarized at least once during the past year.

 

While teachers could do a manual in each text, this would take a long time. Docode solves this problem, automating the review, contrasting each job with the information available online and the texts produced by classmates.

 

Al Docode use, the teacher delivers the statement of a task, which is sent to each student via e-mail with a link where you can upload the work on the date stipulated. After reviewing the software does, noticing a change in writing style (an indicator of a possible plagiarism) and similarity with other documents on the Internet (identifying their origin and showing what parts have been plagiarized) and with others.

 

DOCODE currently being used in a school, two professional institutes and the University of Chile. In the latter case, the software is integrated with the course management system U-Courses, be available to all teachers. As revealed by John Velazquez, one of the creators of the product, This has made the drop to the level of plagiarism this semester have not reported cases of copy.

 

Velazquez also announced that from today will be available DOCODE Lite, a free service that will allow users to upload up 3 documents a day and see if they have plagiarized content. The creators received a new fund for the creation of a business plan, with the idea that DOCODE be sold before year-end.
